
11 APR 2011 - SARDINIA: One worker died, two were poisoned and one injured due to a hydrogen sulphide emission while they were carrying out maintenance services inside a tank.
14 SEPT 2010 - CAMPANIA: Capua: Three employees of an outside company were working at a silo complex. Their task was to remove the scaffolding used by another firm engaged to carry out chemical maintenance on the structure. The fumes rising from a combination of nitrogen and helium erroneously left in the tank were the almost instant cause of their deaths.
25 AUG 2010 - PUGLIA: In the area around San Ferdinando di Puglia, between the provinces of Bari and Foggia, one worker died and two were injured due to gas fumes while they were sealing a rain-water tank.
12 JAN 2010 - PIEDMONT: Between Sale and Tortona (Alessandria), two workers who entered a disused storage tank at a garage were overcome by gas fumes and died.
15 JUNE 2009 - LIGURIA: At Riva Ligure (Imperia), two workers died after falling into a sewerage tank at a treatment plant.
26 MAY 2009 - SARDINIA: Three workers died from asphyxia, in the course of just a few minutes, when one was trying to rescue the other from a tank at a refinery complex.
11 JUNE 2008 - SICILY: Six workers died at Mineo (Catania) while cleaning a tank at the treatment plant. Four of them were Council employees and the other two were from a private company.
3 MAR 2008 - PUGLIA: Five people died at Molfetta (Bari) from fumes released while they were cleaning the tank of an industrial vehicle. Three workers and the head of the firm died inside the tank, the fourth man died in hospital the following day.
18 JAN 2008 - VENETO: Two professionally trained workers were asphyxiated by gas fumes and died while cleaning the tank of a ship at Porto Marghera (Venice).
16 MAR 2007 - VENETO: Two workers lost their lives at Cogollo di Tregnago (Verona), killed by fumes from a tank they had entered to carry out maintenance work.
18 AUG 2006 - PUGLIA: Two workers fell into a tank and died, overcome by fumes, at an oil refinery at Monopoli (Bari)
These are just a few examples from the news reporting fatalities at work, all of them related to gas emissions or operations undertaken in confined spaces without an oxygen supply.
